South Korea's former prime minister Han Duck-soo has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for engaging in critical duties of the insurrection related to the ill-fated martial law decree by former president Yoon Suk-yeol.

The lengthy sentence came as a surprise as an independent counsel that led the investigation demanded a 15-year prison term for Han.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled on Wednesday that he neglected his responsibilities as prime minister to protect the constitution.

A judge said Han was found guilty because he was instrumental in holding an unlawful cabinet meeting that facilitated the declaration in December 2024.

The court said the 76-year-old also concealed and destroyed relevant documents to make the martial law appear as if it had followed legal procedures, while discussing plans to block the function of major institutions as part of the insurrection.
