Two self-claimed medical institutions are suspected of smuggling pregnant women's blood samples from the mainland into Hong Kong for fetal gender testing. The Health Department on Wednesday said they have followed up on the matter.

The two institutions are "Nova Medical" and "Hong Kong BOYA Medical Centre." Social media pages suggest the two institutions may be connected.

While the "Hong Kong BOYA Medical Centre" claimed to be a registered clinic, the Health Department said the two centres had never applied for clinic licences or letters of exemptionunder the Private Healthcare Facilities Ordinance. Authorities have referred the cases to the Customs and Excise Department.

The department's investigation shows that two labs are also involved in the incident, including Zentrogene Bioscience Laboratory Limited.

Under the law, individuals who import blood or blood component that is suspected of containing an infectious agent without an authorised written permission will face a fine of 5,000 dollars and two months' imprisonment.
