The coroner's court ruled that the 39 victims of the 2012 Lamma Ferry Disaster, which claimed 39 lives, were unlawfully killed.

Chiu Ping-chuen, a survivor of the disaster, arrived at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts this morning to hear the verdict. His sister died in the disaster.

The coroner's inquest began last May, examining all 39 victims and calling 84 witnesses, including 7 expert witnesses. Closing arguments were completed in mid-September.

The inquest focused on several key issues, including why the vessel "Lamma IV" lacked a watertight door in its stern, and whether there were systemic errors in the Marine Department's approval and supervision processes.

The inquest was conducted without a jury by a coroner. The ruling was originally scheduled for November, but has been postponed three times.
