U.S. President Donald Trump has linked his aggressive stance on Greenland to last year's decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, telling Norway's prime minister that he no longer felt "an obligation to think purely of Peace".

This as Greenland's prime minister reaffirmed that the latest U.S. statements on controlling his country will not change Greenland's firm stance in defending its right to decide its own future.

More Danish combat troops arrive in Greenland for winter training amid rising tensions with the U.S. over the strategic territory.

Danish soldiers landing Monday evening at Kangerlussuaq Airport as part of what the Danish government says is an expanded activity in Greenland carried out in close cooperation with NATO allies.

At a meeting in Brussels with the NATO chief, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said that the issue is so difficult and tense for Denmark, Europe and the future of NATO.

Greenland's Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt, also at the meeting said, "Troels and I achieved some important things with regard to security in the Arctic. It is important to know how to work with security in the Arctic. That is why we are now carrying out various exercises."

Speaking to journalists in London and after meeting British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, the Danish Foreign Minister said US President Donald Trump will not achieve his Greenland aims by putting pressure on Europe.

"I made it very clear that we are open for these kinds of discussions," said Lars Lokke Rasmussen. "We are pragmatic, cold-blooded Scandinavian people with a warm heart. But it is not easy when we wake up every morning to new threats.

"Please convey that message to the president. And therefore, for a second I thought, no, we have managed not to solve the problem, but to find a pathway forward. It was disrupted by the statement from the president, and that's a reality of life and that's why it's so important that all our allies in the NATO alliance and the European Union stand up for these principles, to show the American president you have a desire, you have a vision, you have a request, but you will never be able to achieve that by putting pressure on us."
