The Chinese New Year fireworks display, featuring horse elements and auspicious symbols, is set to light up the sky over Victoria Harbour on February 18 at 8 p.m. The sponsor -- the Hong Kong Jockey Club offered a preview of what will be on display during the 23-minute spectacle. Chinese New Year is always a highlight in Hong Kong's festive calendar, drawing thousands of tourists to share in the festivities. With the theme of this year's fireworks display being "Prosperity Gallops across Hong Kong," the show will be split into eight scenes. The fireworks display will last for 23 minutes, during which 31,888 pyrotechnic shells will be fired into the air -- 8,000 more than last year, with an estimated cost of over 19 million dollars. To usher in the Year of the Horse with spirit, fireworks in the second scene will depict golden ingots, extending blessings of good fortune and success. This will be followed by horse racing related elements, where horseshoe-shaped fireworks and "WIN" motifs will be shown across the sky. There will also be images of the Chinese character which means good fortune, symbolising love and hope for the world. Wilson Mao of Pyromagic Multimedia Production said: "We have many symbols, symbolic icons that are horse-related and Chinese-new-year related, such as number 8, which also defines infinity. Horse has infinite potentials." Winfried Engelbrecht Besges, CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club said: "For the Hong Kong Jockey Club, this is a very very special auspicious year and a very special occasion when we want to celebrate the special role of horses and horse racing in their 140 years of history of the Club and the history of Hong Kong with horsing racing having very very deep roots in the community." Apart from sponsoring the fireworks display, the Hong Kong Jockey Club will extend the Chinese New Year celebrations to the mainland, by supporting drone shows in Conghua and Shanghai.
