In central Philippines, four people including an engineer and a female office worker were killed in a landfill collapse in the village of Binaliw in Cebu City.

On Saturday, rescuers continued to race against time to find survivors in the rubble with heavy equipment and manual digging as families anxiously waited for news of their loved ones.

The operations were intermittently halted due to safety concerns.

More than 30 individuals were missing after a huge mound of garbage collapsed among the buildings of a waste management facility late Thursday afternoon.

Twelve injured workers have been extricated from the debris and rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said the four dead were all employees of the landfill and waste management facility with a staff of 110.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse and are assessing the safety of nearby communities.
