President Xi Jinping said differences between China and South Korea should be addressed through dialogue and consultation after meetings with his South Korean counterpart Lee Jae Myung, who seeks to restore ties with China and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula. Both leaders have underscored the importance of dialogue as they wrapped up their meeting on Monday, the second talk in as many months. Lee told Xi that he wishes to open a new phase in bilateral relations. Noting the two countries are close neighbours with long-standing ties, Lee said South Korea stands ready to seek common ground while putting aside differences, deepen strategic cooperative partnership, and seize the opportunities brought by China's 15th Five-Year Plan. Xi noted China has consistently placed relations with South Korea high on its regional diplomatic agenda, expressing willingness to uphold the direction of friendly cooperation on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes. He added Beijing and Seoul bear important responsibilities in upholding peace in Northeast Asia and have broad common interests, therefore both sides should "firmly stand on the right side of history and make the right strategic choices." The foreign ministry announced that China and South Korea agreed to carry out cultural exchanges in an orderly manner. Lee's security advisor told reporters after the leaders' summit that working-level talks on movies, dramas and other cultural contents would also be held. The South Korean president held back-to-back meetings with Premier Li Qiang and China's top legislator Zhao Leji in Beijing on strengthening strategic coordination and cementing momentum in exchanges between the two legislatures and economic sectors. Lee has also pushed to expand people-to-people interaction, with both sides agreeing that deeper trust is the bedrock of stable bilateral relations. He then landed in Shanghai this afternoon for a two-day trip that would include an official banquet and business events.
