A number of countries have condemned the US attack on Venezuela, during which President Nicolas Maduro was seized and taken to a detention centre in New York. Some nations supported the US action, while others preferred to take a neutral stance. As Venezuelans absorb the impact of the US attack, queueing at supermarkets to stock up on supplies, reaction across the world was mixed. United Nations, in a statement, described it as a "dangerous precedent", adding that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said he is worried international law has not been respected. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson called on the United States to release Maduro and his wife immediately, adding that the U.S. move is in clear violation of international law, basic norms in international relations, and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Chinese mainland media earlier quoted the foreign ministry as saying Beijing was deeply shocked and condemned the US attack against a sovereign state. In Iran, an IRINN newsreader read a statement from the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemning the US action as a blatant violation of Venezuela's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Cuban president, Miguel Diaz Canel, spoke to a large crowd that had gathered in Havana in support of Venezuela. He said Cuba condemns and denounces these actions as an act of state terrorism and a criminal assault against the region. He added that the US has no moral or legal authority to forcibly remove the Venezuelan president and is responsible for his physical well-being. Mexicans also came out in force to support President Claudia Sheinbaum, who condemned the US attack. Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it strongly condemns and rejects the military action carried out unilaterally as a clear violation of the UN Charter. Argentina and Ecuador were among the South American countries expressing support for the US intervention. Across Europe, most countries expressed hope of a peaceful conclusion for the sake of the Venezuelan people. Russia's foreign ministry condemned the act, saying the pretexts used to justify the attack were unfounded. Spain said it never recognised Maduro as president but neither would it recognise an intervention that violates international law.
