The U.S. attacked Venezuela and deposed its long-serving President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday. U.S. President Donald Trump says he originally gave the all-clear for the operation to capture Maduro four days earlier but that was held up until Saturday because of bad weather. U.S. President Trump said "Washington had successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country." Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Maduro was captured by special operations forces and whisked by helicopters to the Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship in the Caribbean, ahead of his transfer to New York. Trump said the operation was carried out "in conjunction with US Law Enforcement." Republican U.S. Senator Mike Lee said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had told him Maduro would stand trial on criminal charges in the US and no further action was anticipated inside Venezuela. Maduro was indicted in U.S. federal court in 2020 on narco-terrorism and other charges for running what prosecutors called a scheme to send tonnes of cocaine to the US through an alleged "Cartel de Los Soles."
