An HKU scholar believes U.S. military action against Venezuela aims at exerting pressure on Caracas to export oil to the U.S. and curb drug trafficking. He adds that the move is intended as a warning to countries across Central and South America. Honorary Professor Sonny Lo from the University of Hong Kong's Department of Politics and Public Administration says Washington is seeing itself as "the world police" after its move to take the leader of another country into custody and put him on trial in the U.S. Lo says the message is directed at countries in Central and South America that if they become too close to Russia or China, especially through resource exchange or exports, the U.S. may view such ties as a threat to its national security. But on the timing of the U.S. military action, which came a day after Maduro met a Chinese delegation, Lo says it's likely a coincidence.
