Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Maduro was removed from power after refusing a negotiated exit.

She said her colleague Edmundo Gonzalez, who the Venezuelan opposition, the U.S. and international observers say won a 2024 election, should assume the presidency, adding the opposition will restore order in the country and free political prisoners.

Meanwhile, China and several other countries have condemned the U.S. for launching military strikes on Venezuela.

A day before the U.S. operation, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met China's Special Representative on Latin American Affairs Qiu Xiaoqi and thanked Beijing for its "brotherly friendship."

In Beijing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it was deeply shocked by Washington's blatant use of force against a sovereign country, saying it threatens the peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

On the eve of U.S. military action, Maduro met a Chinese delegation in Caracas led by China's envoy Qiu Xiaoqi.

Maduro expressed gratitude for the support of China's leaders and reaffirmed his commitment to stepping up bilateral ties.

Qiu meanwhile says China and Venezuela are strategic partners that have stood the test of time, adding that Venezuela presents great opportunities for China.

A statement from Caracas says the meeting helps consolidate a new multipolar world order, stressing that bilateral relations remain firm.

Russia denounced what it called armed aggression by the US against Venezuela.

Iran says the U.S. action was a blatant violation of Venezuela's territorial integrity.

Venezuela's neighbour Colombia has called on the United Nations and the Organisation of American States to convene emergency meetings to iron out a response.

In the U.S., multiple Congress members have opposed military action against Venezuela, arguing there's no justification based on major national interests while others questioned the legality of the operation without congressional authorisation.

The European Union says it has stated that Maduro lacks legitimacy but also urges all parties to exercise restraint and respect international law.
