Some political analysts believe US military action against Venezuela is intended to exert pressure on Caracas to export oil to the US and curb drug trafficking. As the situation deteriorates in Venezuela, some political academics say US President Donald Trump's order to launch attacks on the country is aimed at securing oil export from Venezuela and combat drug trafficking. Honorary Professor Sonny Lo from the University of Hong Kong's Department of Politics and Public Administration says the move is akin to how Washington dealt with Iran -- taking pre-emptive military and political strikes to force adversaries to make concessions. He says China will not send troops but will seek to influence the US through diplomatic means. He adds that the US might see itself as "the world police" -- and it's likely that the Trump administration doesn't think that its action violated international law. Lo also expects Brazil and other Central American countries and organisations to urge the US to exercise restraint.
