Having earlier cancelled the large-scale fireworks display for the New Year countdown event, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has instead organised a new live music and light show at the pedestrian area of Chater Road in Central. This as the HKTB believes the replacement event will attract residents and tourists alike to enjoy a festive atmosphere. Here at the pedestrian area on Chater Road, revellers won't be treated to a mega fireworks display this year, but instead a countdown gala surrounded by Central's skyscrapers. A total of eight buildings will participate in the celebratory light show including the Court of Final Appeal and HSBC headquarters, during which a giant clock will be displayed on the structures creating a festive countdown experience. A three-minute light show themed "New Hopes, New Beginnings" will also be performed to welcome the upcoming year. In a bid to liven up the mood, the HKTB invited Australian band Air Supply, local musicians and even children's choirs to perform at the venue. Hung Chung-hing, the HKTB's advisor for event and product development, believes most tourists expect to see fireworks displays during the city's new year celebrations, but noted that many may find the alternative performance in Central a refreshing experience. Authorities will also broadcast the performance at Chater Garden and Edinburgh Place at the time of the live show, with the police set to cordon off the area around Chater Road on the 31st of this month starting at 6 p.m.
