A knife attack in the South American nation of Suriname overnight took the lives of at least nine people, including five children.

The incident took place in Richelieu, about 25 kilometres east of the capital on Sunday.

A 43-year-old male suspect had an argument with his estranged wife on the phone before fatally stabbing four of his own kids and neighbours who came to their aid.

The assailant attempted to attack officers who arrived at the scene. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during his arrest.

He is in hospital under police supervision. According to local media reports, he appears to be suffering from mental health issues.

A sixth child and another adult seriously injured in the attack were being treated at a hospital.

The country's president Jennifer Geerlings-Simons said she wishes "all the bereaved much strength, resilience and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time."
