French actress, fashion icon and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has passed away at her home in southern France. She was 91.

The cause of her death was not immediately known.

Brigitte Bardot, often referred to as "B.B.," was born to a well-off Parisian family in 1934 and became an international celebrity dancing the mambo barefoot in the 1956 film "And God Created Woman" directed by her then-husband, Roger Vadim.

The screen siren was also known for her roles in "Contempt," "The Truth" and "Viva Maria!" with portrayals of free-spirited ingenues.

At the height of her fame, she chose to retire from acting at 39 and devoted much of her attention to animal rights by establishing the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised Bardot for her dazzling glory and her face that became Marianne, the national emblem of France.

He said, "We are mourning a legend of the century."
