The tropical depression in the South China Sea is moving northwestwards and is expected to bring heavy downpours to Hainan Island, Guangdong and Guangxi.

The mainland's meteorological department says the wind force in waters around the Qiongzhou Strait and the Paracel Islands could reach level 8.

It is expected that the tropical depression will make landfall or pass through the southern coastal area of Hainan Island between tonight and early tomorrow morning.

Guangdong and Guangxi are also expecting severe rainstorms, starting Sunday afternoon.

As preventive measures, Haikou New Port and Xiuying Port are among the seaports in Hainan suspending services starting noon.

Apart from southern provinces, heavy rain is lashing northern regions including Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and Shandong. Authorities have sent rescue teams to the outskirts of Bayannur city of Inner Mongolia which was hit by flash floods on Saturday night.

At least nine people have been killed with three people missing in the floods.
