The Amendment Bill of the Public Health and Municipal Services took effect today.
This means Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers are empowered to issue a notice to remove obstruction within a specified time.
In the past, the ordinance only targets obstructions occupying public places.
Under the amended law, offences also cover shopfront extension, and offenders will face a fixed penalty of 6,000 dollars.
Officers also have the power to remove the obstructions if the offenders fail to comply with instructions given to them.
Regarding nuisances such as water dripping from air-conditioners and water seepage in buildings, officers are allowed to enter the premises involved up to 10 p.m., three hours later than before.
