The Hong Kong Tourism Board has teamed up with a local creative company to organise an exhibition showcasing characters from the popular Japanese comic and cartoon series Chiikawa.

Fans of Japanese comic and animation Chiikawa had the opportunity to meet the popular Chiikawa characters face to face at a Tsim Sha Tsui shopping mall today.

The month-long event also attracted the likes of Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law and Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board Peter Lam, who eagerly took photos with the anime icons.

With a theme highlighting "daily life", the Chiikawa exhibition displays more than a hundred items from toys to giant-sized statues of the manga characters reenacting scenes from the series.

Blending its fictional world with Hong Kong flair, several scenes featured animated animal characters enjoying local delicacies in a traditional tea house.

Besides the primary exhibition inside the mall, visitors can see giant inflatables of Chiikawa and friends near the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the mall's podium garden.

Speaking about the event's impact on the tourism sector, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law hopes such events could foster the development of the intellectual property, or IP industry and attract more tourists to Hong Kong.

The creative brand that co-organised the exhibition stressed Hong Kong's strategic location for being a mega events hub.

"Last year we did the very successful exhibition of Doraemon in Hong Kong," founder of AllRightsReserved. "So that's why K11 offered another location to us. I think Hong Kong is an international city. So, as for marketing, public relations, sales, we still have a very strong advantage."

Fans of Chiikawa can now get the chance to be surrounded by characters of their favourite manga series here. Set to welcome scores of local visitors and tourists, the exhibition's initial ending date on August 24th has been extended by an extra week.
