Ukraine's Parliament has overwhelmingly approved a bill presented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that restores independence of two of the country's key anti-corruption agencies.
This reverses his contentious move last week that curbed their power which brought an outcry from people at home and abroad.
Tracey Furniss has more.
Protesters in Ukraine's capital Kyiv chanting 'vote' and 'disgrace' before a vote to restore independence to two key anti-corruption watchdogs took place.
They hold up handmade signs. And a puppet made from signs.
This protester said, the Parliament must pass the bill that will restore the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. The crowd watches the live broadcast of the parliament session.
Then clapping and cheering as the bill is passed. They chant " Power is the people." The parliament approved the new proposal with 331 vote and nine abstentions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he signed the bill less than two hours after its overwhelming approval in parliament.- an unusually speedy procedure for legislation.
Though the protests didn't call for the president's removal, the controversy threatened to undermine public trust in the country's leaders at a critical time.
Fighting entrenched corruption is crucial for Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union and maintain access to billions of dollars of vital Western aid
in the nearly three-and-a-half year war with Russia.
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said that its forces have taken full control of the strategically important city of Chasiv Yar in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.
Russian and Ukraine troops have battled for control of Chasiv Yar for nearly 18 months. It includes a hilltop from where troops can attack other key points in the region that form the backbone of Ukraine's eastern defences. Russia's ground invasion coincided with continued airstrikes on Ukrainian cities.
