Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight local time.

This is seen as a significant breakthrough to resolve five days of deadly border clashes that have killed dozens and displaced tens of thousands of people.

According to the host of the talks between the two countries, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, military commanders from both sides will begin to hold talks Tuesday to defuse tension, while Cambodia will host a border committee meeting on August 4th.

News of the ceasefire brought relief and hope to evacuees from both sides.

Displaced Thais in Surin province gave cheer to the latest news with many saying normal people like themselves are happy to return home.

Across the border in Cambodia, the sentiment is echoed by Cambodian evacuees.

They are happy to go home to their livestock and fields, and the children are ready to go back to school.
