The U.N. General Assembly is bringing high-level officials together this week to promote a two-state solution to the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict.

But Israel and its close ally the United States, are boycotting the two-day meeting which starts today, co-chaired by the foreign ministers of France and Saudi Arabia.

This as the situation in Gaza is worsening. The Palestinian death toll is just under 60,000 since the latest conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on October 7th, 2023.

Tracey Furniss reports.

More air drops of aid packages over the skies of Gaza, this time from Jordan in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates.

The planes dropped 25 tons of food and supplies Sunday on several locations in the territory.

And on the ground, dozens of trucks queuing early Sunday morning, waiting to cross from Egypt into Gaza.

The Israeli military pausing fighting for 10 hours a day in three populated areas of Gaza in order for aid to get through.

U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on the worsening Gaza situation, as he met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland.

"It's terrible. You know, when I see the children and what I see, especially over the last couple of weeks, and people are stealing the food, they're stealing the money. They steal the money for the food, they're stealing weapons, stealing everything. It's a mess. That whole place is a mess."

Trump also warned that Hamas is hardening on hostage deals.

"When you get it (number of hostages) down to a certain number, you're not going to be able to make a deal with Hamas, because once they give them (hostages) up,
then they feel that that's going to be the end of them. And what I said is exactly true. They don't want to give them back and so Israel is going to have to make a decision. I know what I'd do, but I don't think it's appropriate that I say, but Israel is going to have to make a decision" he said.

U.N. Human Rights chief Volker Turk called for concrete global action in a video he released ahead of the U.N. conference.

Volker said: "I urge immediate steps by Israel to end its unlawful continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, and for all parties to work for tangible progress towards a two-state solution. I urge governments to use the opportunity of this conference for concrete action that puts all possible pressure on the Israeli government to end the carnage in Gaza permanently. Countries that fail to use their leverage may be complicit in international crimes."
