To the growing call for answers over sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, U.S. President Donald Trump is now pushing for a court to release all grand jury testimony.
Trump is also suing over a report that he sent Epstein a suggestive birthday card years ago.
Tonight, a federal judge weighing whether to release grand jury testimony related to notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as President Trump deals with political backlash from his own supporters after criticising many in his base for pushing for more information on Epstein.
DONALD TRUMP, U.S. President:“This, people that are really doing the Democrats' work. They're stupid people.”
President Trump reversed course and posted online calling for the Department of Justice to release all grand jury testimony with respect to Jeffrey Epstein, subject only to court approval.
Friday, the DOJ filing a motion in federal court in Manhattan to have the grand jury transcripts unsealed.
By law, grand jury testimony is kept secret with some limited exceptions, but some legal experts say even if unsealed, the grand jury information is not likely to give people calling for more answers what they want.
KRISTY GREENBERG, Fmr. Deputy Chief, Criminal Div., Southern District of New York:“These are grand jury transcripts that are focused on the guilt of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. So, the people that are interested in a client list in potential culpability of third parties, they're not going to find what they're looking for in these transcripts.”
All of this coming as the president vowed a 10-billion-dollar libel lawsuit against the Wall Street journal's parent company, owner Rupert Murdoch, and the reporters behind its article describing an alleged letter President Trump wrote to Epstein for his 50th birthday, reporting that they had been able to review the document.
NBC News has not independently verified the existence of the document.
In a statement, Dow Jones said "we have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit."
Meanwhile, four people familiar with White House deliberations tell NBC News President Trump is growing weary of defending Attorney General (Pam) Bondi after the fallout over the DOJ and FBI saying they did not find an Epstein client list.
