Anwar speaks on tariffs as ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting opens in Malaysia

The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting series opened this morning in Kuala Lumper, with over 30 foreign ministers from ASEAN member states and dialogue partners attending.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend key meetings including the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and the ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, holding the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN, said: "Tools used once used to generate growth are now wielded to pressure, isolated and contain tariffs, export restrictions and investment barriers have now become the sharpened instruments of geopolitical rivalry. This is no passing storm. It is a new weather of our time now, ASEAN must confront this reality with clarity and conviction.
