Eight people, including a headmaster, have been arrested in China after more than 200 kindergarten students fell ill with abnormally high levels of lead in their blood.

Investigations in Gansu found lead in food served to the students. The sick children attended a privately owned kindergarten and displayed symptoms including stomach and leg pain and hair loss.

State broadcaster CCTV, citing investigators, said two food samples -- red date cakes and corn sausage rolls -- from the school were found to have lead content far above official limits.

The kindergarten reportedly bought paint online and added it while preparing the food.

Of the 251 students, 233 recorded dangerous lead levels, with 201 receiving hospital treatment.
