A recent survey found that 40 percent of households in Hong Kong reported that they are either unhappy or unsure if they are happy.

That marks a rise of 20 percentage points compared with last year.

The poll, conducted in mid-May, by the Women's Federation surveyed 1,367 parents and 1,200 students.

They cited reasons including financial burden and the lack of family interaction.

One-third of the students surveyed said they rarely or never felt happy. Academic-related stressed burdened students from Primary 4 to Secondary 3 the most. The group has called on the government to reinstate the 2,500-dollar student allowance to ease household financial strain.

Schools are also recommended to strengthen mental health support, and diversify assessment methods.
