Record numbers of migrants have crossed the English Channel this year from France to the United Kingdom.
But now pressure has been put on France from the U.K. to give police patrols an even freer hand to try and curtail the flow of migrant crossings.
These are common scenes on the English Channel, overloaded flimsy boats filled with migrants trying to reach U.K. shores from France. But French police swooped in with knives on one recent crossing attempt.
This was all that was left of this boat which was filmed on a beach near Boulogne. The French Interior Ministry said that police have not been issued orders to slash boats.
But the British government which is partly funding France's policing efforts welcomed what it called a toughening of the French approach.
The U.K. is also pushing France to let officers intervene against boats in deeper waters, a change the government in Paris is considering.
