Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called on BRICS members to take the lead in reforms of global governance, upholding independence and acting collectively amid looming tariff threats by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The 17th BRICS summit opened in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The bloc of developing nations passed a declaration to condemn mounting tariffs and attacks on Iran, but avoided direct mention of the U.S.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of host country Brazil, drew a parallel with the Cold War's Non-Aligned Movement.
He told fellow leaders, "With multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is in check once again," and said BRICS, with its representation and diversity, can be a force to promote peace and mediate conflicts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Egyptian leader Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi were absent from the meeting.
Premier Li Qiang, who represented China, said in an address that international rules and order face grave challenges while the authority and efficacy of multilateral mechanisms are weakening.
Li said BRICS countries should uphold independence, act responsibly, and take bigger steps to build consensus and pool strength in advancing global governance reform.
He added member states should actively spearhead development cooperation and tap into the growth potential of emerging sectors, and that China is ready to work with developing countries to promote an orderly multipolar world.
Russian President Vladimir Putin attended online due to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court related to the war in Ukraine. Noting the model of liberal globalisation is obsolete, Putin underlined the importance of stepping up cooperation in spheres including technology, natural resources and finance.
He continued to champion the expansion of de-dollarisation as he stated the use of national currencies in trade between BRICS members is accelerating.
