A tourist brought more than 900 duty-unpaid cigarette sticks into Hong Kong and was sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment.

Customs said the 63-year-old woman arrived in Hong Kong yesterday and was intercepted at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point.

Authorities seized 981 duty-unpaid cigarettes in her personal luggage with an estimated value of about 4,000 dollars and a dutiable value of about 3,200 dollars.

She was sentenced to four weeks behind bars at the courts today.

Customs say the sentence underscores that tourists may be sentenced to imprisonment even if they are first-time offenders.
