U.S. President Donald Trump says a buyer for video-sharing app TikTok is waiting in the wings -- to be revealed in two weeks. Trump also touched on trade issues with China during a television interview.
During an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump said his administration had inked a deal with China while re-emphasising the massive trade deficit between the two countries.
Trump went on to claim that the Chinese economy sank as U.S. levies rose to 145 percent in early April, and then Washington did China a favour.
The U.S. president stressed he has a very good relationship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping; in spite of this, China would still be "paying substantial tariffs."
Trump mentioned a possible TikTok deal, hinting a group of wealthy buyers has been lined up to purchase the platform's U.S. operations.
The deal is believed to need Beijing's approval. Trump said he thought President Xi would probably give the nod.
Trump said: "We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need probably China approval. And I think President Xi will probably do it. (Anchor: Who's buying it?) I'll tell you in about two weeks. (Anchor: A big technology company?) Very, very wealthy people. It's a group of very wealthy people."
TikTok went dark briefly in January when a national ban approved by the U.S. Congress went into effect amid claims it posed a threat to national security.
Last week, Trump signed an executive order to extend the app's ban-or-sale deadline for a third time. This requires TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform by September 17th.
Trump also suggested the U.S. is hacking China, after the interviewer alleged Chinese hackers have tried to attack U.S. systems and steal intellectual property.
Officials in Beijing have long stated that the United States is behind the world's largest hack operation and China falls victim to cyberattacks.
