A NASA retiree-turned-private astronaut, Peggy Whitson, was launched to orbit on the fifth flight of her career early Wednesday.
She was joined by crew members from India, Poland and Hungary, heading for their countries' first visit to the International Space Station.
The astronaut team lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida at about 2:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
The launch is the latest mission organised by Texas-based Axiom Space in partnership with Elon Musk's rocket venture SpaceX.
Video showed the towering spacecraft streaking into the night sky, trailed by a yellowish plume of fiery exhaust. Whitson radioed that it had been "an incredible ride uphill."
For India, Poland and Hungary, the launch marked the first mission to send their astronauts to the International Space Station.
The three countries split the bill, costing 65 million U.S. dollars each.
