Kenyan officers tried to clear the streets of demonstrators protesting against police brutality.

Mostly young people took to the streets of the capital, Nairobi.

In response, officers launched tear gas canisters to try to disperse crowds.

People ran for cover.

The close-range shooting of a civilian during a similar recent protest increased their anger.

Those on the streets claim police have been involved in murders, extortion and kidnaps and that the government is not doing enough to stop it.

The crowds grew larger during the day.

Fires were lit in the streets as police increased their numbers too.

Like minded protests are said to be developing in other cities.

Protestor Rose Murugi outlined her concerns: "Enforced disappearances and they are involved in, you know, kidnapping people and abducting people. And we've seen some people turn up dead, so this must end. We are not scared to say it, we will say it boldly, we will say it courageously."

Another protestor Sevelina Mwihaki yelled at a journalist: "Enough is enough, this is a nation, this is not a forest, enough is enough, Kenya. We are here for change, it is time for us to get our nation, the blood that we have shed is enough."
