Police in Michigan believe a mass shooting was averted after armed security guards at a church killed a man who had started firing a weapon during Sunday service.
The suspect was driving his white truck erratically and then stepped out wearing a tactical vest and armed with two guns.
He began firing as people inside and outside the church ran for cover.
Security staff at the church were able to kill him with police praising their "heroic actions."
Police say the gunman was a 31-year-old suffering "a mental health crisis".
Police chief Ryan Strong said: "Staff members from the church approached the gunman.A parishioner struck the gunman with his vehicle as the gunman shot the vehicle repeatedly. At least two staff members shot the gunman, causing fatal wounds. One staff member was shot once in the leg by the suspect. We are grateful for the heroic actions of the church's staff members, who undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large scale mass shooting.
