British lawmakers voted on a bill on Friday that allows terminally ill adults in England and Wales to choose to end their lives.

After a few hours of impassioned debate in the House of Commons, lawmakers backed the assisted "End of Life" Bill with a vote of 314-291, taking it a step nearer to becoming law.

The bill would introduce assisted dying for terminally ill people over age 18 who are diagnosed with less than six months to live.

The individuals would have to be capable of taking the fatal drugs themselves, and their decision would require approval from two doctors and a panel of experts.

The bill now heads to the House of Lords for further consideration.
