The University of Hong Kong climbed up to 11th place in the latest rankings by international higher education analytics firm QS, with four other local universities having placed among the top 100.

This makes HKU the top-ranked university in the nation.

Covering more than 1,500 higher education institutions from around the world, QS university rankings are based on nine categories consisting of academic reputation, the proportion of international faculty and students as well as research citations.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, retained its top position on the list.

Compared with last year, the University of Hong Kong rose by six spots from 17th to 11th place, setting a new record.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) were all placed among the top 100 universities globally.

Five mainland universities were placed among the top 50, with Peking University positioned at 14th place, while Tsinghua University was ranked 17th.

In the categories of international faculty and student proportion, HKU achieved a full score of 100 points.

QS said the overall improvement rate of the city's universities reached 71 percent, the highest in Asia.

The university analytics firm particularly praised CityU for its research citation rate, which was ranked second globally just behind Harvard University.

But Hong Kong's higher education institutions suffered a drop in score in the area of international research networks.

The Education Bureau hailed the international reputation of the city's education system, and stressed it reflects Hong Kong's attractiveness as a hub for global talent.
