President Xi Jinping has landed in the Kazakh capital for the second China-Central Asia summit to be held this week.

The summit will gather the leaders of China and five central Asian countries for discussions on the development of the China-Central Asia mechanism.

An academic believes the summit will push forward their collective planning of connectivity and improve infrastructure and logistics for building high-quality "Belt and Road Initiative" projects.

Kazakh Air Force fighter jets escorted President Xi's charter flight before it touched down at an airport in Astana at 3pm Hong Kong time. A military band played welcoming music upon his arrival.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev greeted the Chinese leader. Young children in traditional costumes cheered on the tarmac, waving the national flags of China and Kazakhstan. Helicopters carrying the flags of both nations flew high above the airport.

This is Xi's sixth visit to the Central Asian country. He will stay there for three days for the summit that involves China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Chinese ambassador to Kazakhstan Han Chunlin said the China-Central Asia Summit will inject positive energy and certainty to the world.

During the sixth China-Central Asia Foreign Ministers' Meeting two months ago, all parties affirmed their support for multilateralism.

They agreed to enhance dialogue and cooperation under the framework of the United Nations, abide by the rules of international trade, and oppose unilateral protectionist actions.
