In May, Hong Kong received close to 4.08 million visitors, an increase of 20 percent year-on-year.
Approximately 3.12 million mainlanders travelled to Hong Kong during the May 1st Golden Week holiday, seeing a year-on-year rise of 19 percent, while the number of non-mainland visitors gained 24 percent to nearly 960,000.
Short-haul visitors recorded the largest growth, up by 28 percent compared with the same month last year.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board attributed the increases to major events such as concerts and exhibitions in the city.
In the first five months of this year, Hong Kong recorded a cumulative total of over 200 million visitor arrivals, up 12 percent year-on-year.
Among them, mainland and non-mainland visitors grew by 10 percent and 18 percent respectively.
The Tourism Board noted an uptick in non-mainland markets as the number of visitors from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and the Philippines rose by more than 25 percent. The growth of Australian visitors exceeded 35 percent.
