Tensions were escalating on the streets of Los Angeles as police sought to disperse "No Kings" demonstrators.
Police on horseback pushed protesters back and fired flash bangs and tear gas. Protesters responded with loud fireworks and calls to "hold the line."
Masses of demonstrators packed into streets, parks and plazas across the U.S. on Saturday to protest against President Donald Trump while calling for support for protecting democracy and immigrant rights.
Organizers made Philadelphia their hub for the "No Kings" protests and have promoted rallies in 2,000 places across the U.S.
Nationwide confrontations were isolated. But police in Los Angeles, where protests over federal immigration enforcement raids erupted a week earlier and sparked demonstrations across the country, used tear gas and crowd-control munitions to clear out protesters after the formal event ended.
These "No Kings" demonstrations coincided with a military parade in Washington, D.C. to mark 250 years of the U.S. Army.
