Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, struggled to explain how he made it out of the aeroplane after it crashed seconds after take-off, saying: "It's a miracle."

He managed to get out through a gap in the fuselage, and walked away from the crash site moments before the plane exploded.

"Emergency door is broken, my seat is broken. Then I see the place a little bit, then I will try to come out." Ramesh said in broken English.

The British national of Indian origin still appeared to be in shock as he told his story to Indian television. The 40-year-old has visible scars to his face, but said he was "feeling better".

He has been visited by Indian Prime MInister Narendra Modi who saw the devastation for himself as the leader of the world's largest democracy went to the crash site and spoke with others caught up in the disaster.

The London-bound Boeing 787 struck a medical college hostel as it came down. Ramesh was the only person to escape from the plane. All of the other 241 passengers were killed along with some on the ground.

A flight data recorder or "black box" from the crashed jet has been recovered and should provide information as to what went wrong. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
