David Beckham has been knighted for his services to sport and charity.
Soon to be "Sir David Beckham", the 50-year-old former footballer represented England 115 times, 59 times as captain. He played for Manchester United where he won the treble in 1999.
The ex-midfielder also represented Real Madrid and played in the U.S. in a long and distinguished playing career. He is now the owner of Inter Miami in the MLS.
Beckham is also known for his partnership with UNICEF, the U.N.'s children's fund, which has lasted two decades. He has campaigned with the charity working to eradicate malaria.
London-born Beckham also played a pivotal role in the city being awarded the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
Beckham said: "Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour."
Elsewhere, Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman and The Who's frontman Roger Daltrey were also knighted.
Musicals performer Elaine Paige, novelist Pat Barker and former Conservative government minister Penny Mordaunt were given damehoods, the female equivalent of a knighthood.
Hundreds more, who are not famous, are awarded honours in the King's birthday list.
The oldest recipient is 106-year-old World War II veteran William Irwin, who was awarded a British Empire Medal, for his services to the community.
