A black box has been recovered from the Air India crash site in Ahmedabad in northwestern India.
This as rescue workers searched for missing people and aircraft parts in the charred buildings of a medical college hostel after yesterday's plane crash killed more than 240 people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site Friday while authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
Tracey Furniss reports.
CCTV footage accessed and verified by the Associated Press shows Air India flight 171 bound for London taking off and crashing into a medical college hotel in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad. Vishwashkumar Ramesh was the only survivor. His brother in the UK called his escape a miracle.
NAYAN KUMAR RAMESH,Brother of Air India crash survivor Vishwashkumar Ramesh"Even though he survived, yeah, it's a miracle and that. I'm still worried about my other brother. When he was on the runway, my dad called him. And Vishwash said, "Oh, we're going to take off soon." And then literally like 2 minutes later, he video called my dad as he crashed. He said, "Our plane's crashed. I don't know where my brother is. I don't see any other passengers. I don't know how I'm alive, how I exited the plane."
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah visited Ramesh and others who were injured on the ground at a hospital in Ahmedabad Thursday.
The CEO of Air India issued a statement soon after the crash, expressing his sorrow over the disaster.
CAMPBELL WILSON, Chief Executive Officer of Air India said "I would like to express our deep sorrow about this event. This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India. And our efforts are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones.”
U.S. Secretary of Transportation said Washington is deploying a team to India to help in the investigation.
SEAN DUFFY, US. Secretary of Transportation "We're in the process of deploying a team from the FAA, from the NTSB. We also have GE and Boeing that are deploying their resources and investigators to India. I would just note that India leads the investigation. We're there to provide any assistance that India may need as they go through, which appears to be a somewhat lengthy investigation on this crash.”
Recovery efforts are ongoing at the site of Thursday's crash. The area remains cordoned off as the search for bodies continues.
