Standby Signal No. 1 remains in force.

The Hong Kong Observatory said it will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 tomorrow.

Severe Tropical Storm Wutip intensified slightly before skirting past Hainan Island.

The associated rain bands brought strong winds and showers to the South China coast, with more than 20 millimetres of rainfall recorded in many parts of Hong Kong.

The forecaster predicts Wutip will move slowly northwards and cross the Beibu Gulf into the western part of Guangdong, maintaining a distance of more than 500 kilometres from Hong Kong.

It said as Wutip gradually weakened inland, local winds are expected to gradually ease after Sunday.

In Macao, Typhoon Signal No. 1 is also in force and is expected to remain in effect during the day.
