The Standby Signal No. 1 remains in force.

This as the observatory is assessing whether to issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between the latter part of tomorrow and Saturday morning.

Tropical Storm Wutip continues to edge ever closer to Hainan Island and gradually away from Hong Kong.

The city's skies remained sunny throughout the morning but were obscured by squally showers and overcast by the afternoon.

Tse Wai-po, a scientific officer from the observatory, said the atmospheric circulation related to Wutip currently covers the surface along the Guangdong coastline.

Radar images show thunderstorms connected with the tropical storm are affecting the Pearl River Delta region at the moment, with weather authorities noting that the Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in effect between tonight and tomorrow morning.

The observatory forecasts that Wutip will initially pass by Hainan Island tomorrow before moving towards the Gulf of Tonkin around the Leizhou Peninsula.

The tropical storm will then move to the northeast and make landfall on the interior regions of Western Guangdong, before reaching the Pearl River Delta during the weekend.

Weather authorities will consider upgrading the Standby Signal No.1 to the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 between the latter part of tomorrow and Saturday morning in accordance with weather conditions.

Some meteorologists noted the tropical storm will weaken after making landfall, while heavy rain will remain.

Leung Wing-mo, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Meteorological Society, stressed that Hong Kong has historically been impacted by rainstorms whenever a tropical cyclone makes its way to the north of Hong Kong from either the east or west.

This as the observatory predicted the city will continue to experience heavy thunderstorms at the start of next week.

Meanwhile, Macao meteorological authorities downgraded the tropical storm signal No. 3 to No. 1 at 6 p.m.

All primary school and kindergarten classes have been suspended for the day.
