Austrian authorities are searching for answers as to why a 21-year-old gunman shot dead 10 people and wounded 12 others in a rampage at his former high school before killing himself. It is one of the worst outbreaks of violence in the country's modern history.

Emergency services rushing to the scene after receiving a call at around 10:30 a.m. that shots had been fired at a high school in Graz, Austria's second-largest city.

Some 300 police were sent to the school. Special forces too carrying rifles as medical crews were already taking victims out on stretchers rushing them to nearby hospitals.

At least 10 people were killed at the Borg Dreierschutzengasse high school located about a kilometre from Graz's historical centre.

This witness said: "I heard police sirens, unnaturally many and loud. When I got to my balcony, I saw special police forces with rifles who ran around the buildings and in this street here."

Austrian police said victims were found both outside and inside the school on various floors.

At a briefing, police confirmed that there had been several deaths, with other students who were in the building having been evacuated and sent to talk with crisis intervention teams.

Media reports say the 21-year old gunman, who has not been identified, apparently felt bullied, though police have yet to confirm this.

Austrian authorities said the suspect never completed his studies at the school.

Police say the gunman left a farewell note that did not reveal a motive for the attack, adding that a pipe bomb was found at his home but was not functional.

Meanwhile, people gathered for a candlelit vigil in Graz's main square to mourn those who died in the shooting.

And several hundred people attended a mass at the cathedral. Attending too, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, alongside the country's vice-chancellor and foreign minister.

Austria declared three days of national mourning, with the shooting prompting a rare show of solidarity among often bitterly divided political parties.
