The Travel Industry Council led a delegation to Shanxi to meet with officials from the province's Department of Culture and Tourism to discuss strengthening tourism ties.
Discussions included the potential for increasing flights and high-speed rail trips.
Last May, the mainland expanded the Individual Visit Scheme to include eight new cities including Taiyuan, the provincial capital of Shanxi Province.
A group of 70 from the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong travelled to Shanxi as part of a five day delegation to discuss ways to bolster existing tourism ties.
The delegation's trip included visits to cultural sites, as well as a discussion on potential collaborations to promote cultural exchanges to their residents.
They signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Shanxi Department of Culture and Tourism to collaborate in developing travel packages to attract more tourists.
Ren Yongfu, Deputy Director of the Shanxi Department of Culture and Tourism, said they hope to not only promote tourism to both cities, but also to welcome more Hong Kong professionals exploring business opportunities in Shanxi and encourage Shanxi business people to visit Hong Kong.
Tommy Tam, Chairman of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong, said that the number of weekly flights connecting the cities is likely to increase from two to three as cooperation between the cities is strengthened.
