A 37-year-old male tourist from China sustained injuries after being stabbed in the Japanese city of Kyoto on Friday night.

The assailant fled the scene and remains at large.

The Chinese tourist was attacked by a knife-wielding man at around 8 p.m. near the Gojo Bridge in Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward. He suffered non-life threatening stab wounds to the right chest and was reportedly conscious when he arrived at hospital.

Police believe the victim was on a group sightseeing tour and had a quarrel with the suspect right before the attack. The two men apparently didn't know each other.

The case will be investigated as attempted murder.
