Govt expects to cut 10000 civil service posts by April 2027

The government expects to cut some 10,000 civil service posts by April 2027.

Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung revealed the policy in the Legislative Council today.

She noted a "zero-growth" policy has been in place since the 2021/22 financial year -- the number of posts is capped at the March 2021 level of 196,000.

By the end of this March, that figure is projected to drop to around 193,000.

Over the next two fiscal years, the workforce will be further trimmed by two percent annually.

Yeung said the departments are given some flexibility as to how and which posts to cut. They can explore the use of more technology or improved procedures.
