Rwanda genocide memorial unveils in Paris

French President Emmanuel Macron and Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Tuesday inaugurated a monument in Paris in memory of the victims of the Rwanda genocide.

The Tutsi minority was blamed for downing a plane carrying President Juvenal Habyarimana on April 6, 1994.

Habyarimana was ethnic Hutu like the majoirity in the country; bands of Hutu extremists began slaughtering Tutsis and their perceived supporters, with help from the army, police, and militias.

The memorial commemorates the estimated 800,000 people who were killed by government-backed extremists.
